The Bear's Head

Entries

Entry information

We offer racing for pretty much anything:

  • Boat classes: anything except eights and coxless fours

  • Classification: Open / Women / Mixed

  • Categories: Seniors / Juniors / Masters / Adaptive

We encourage those who are able to race in small boats, in keeping with the spirit of the event (and, if necessary, will prioritise use of 4+/x+ for less experienced crews).

Junior categories: We reserve the right to combine junior year groups (J14, J15, etc). if necessary to make competitive racing.

Masters categories: Masters will be combined into the Open, Women and Mixed events and will row with handicaps based on standard time for the course. These handicaps will be subtracted from the actual time. Note that this adjusted time will not be valid for the Bear's Head prize.

Prize eligibility: The top prize is the Bear's Head trophy, which will be shared by the fastest Open and Women's single scullers.

There will be medals for the winners of events with three or more boats, plus the Fastest Open boat and Fastest Women’s boat. Special bonus prizes are on offer for crews judged to have the Best Fancy Dress and Best Crew Name. We invite you to go wild!

Timings: Racing will take place in 3 divisions starting at 08:45, 10:00 and 11:00. All crews in a given division will need to be on the water 30 minutes before it starts. Note that we only have space for 33 crews per division, and have to balance shared equipment, so you may not get to choose your division.

Competing in multiple crews: If you are intending to row in multiple boats, please state in both forms which is your preferred entry. Our priority is to make sure everyone who wants to race gets a row, and will allow doubling up once this is accommodated. Coxes can compete in up to three boats, although note that changeovers will be tight.

Accepting crews: We have a limit of 33 crews per division, and often run a full event. We cannot guarantee that we will be able to accommodate all entries but will try our best. Please note that we reserve the right to reject any entry on safety grounds. All entrants (especially coxless quads) should be prepared to demonstrate that they can safely steer the course.

Race fees: We charge £10 per seat (coxswains go free). Accepted entrants will be sent a payment link before race day.
